About

The Scriptorium

Why we read them aloud.

For most of Christian history, the Fathers were heard before they were read. Their homilies thundered through basilicas. Their epistles were passed from congregation to congregation and read over candles. The mass-produced printed page is a late-comer; the voice is the native medium.

Orthovox returns these texts to their native medium. Every title is drawn from confirmed public-domain translations — the Ante-Nicene Fathers (Roberts & Donaldson, 1867–1885) and the Nicene & Post-Nicene Fathers (Schaff, 1886–1900) editions — and narrated with modern clarity. We credit every source. We give the audio away.

The library will always be free. Premium narrations, early access, and a monthly reflection letter go to patrons, whose support funds every title we produce. One-time alms are also welcomed.

If you find the project useful, the most helpful thing you can do is share a title with one person who might need it. The Fathers were never shy about being passed along.

Let no one say that the books do not speak; they speak more loudly than any bell — if one will only listen. John Chrysostom · Homily on Colossians
